Refractive Lasik Surgery

What is refractive surgery?

Refractive surgery, or laser vision correction, is an in-office procedure that uses a specialized laser to correct or improve your vision. Refractive surgery reshapes your cornea to help your eyes focus more effectively. After refractive surgery, you might not need to wear glasses or contact lenses anymore. If you still need them, you may not need to wear them at all times after refractive surgery.

What can refractive surgery treat?

Refractive surgery can treat all kinds of refractive errors. Refractive errors happen when your corneas, the clear front surface of your eye, is misshapen and cannot deliver a clear image to your retina, the sensory membrane at the back of your eye.   • Nearsightedness (myopia)

What are my options for refractive surgery?

Our laser suite contains the state-or-the-art iFS™ femtosecond laser, and VISX excimer laser which provide the safest, most effective treatment. Our team may recommend one of these two popular refractive surgeries to improve your vision:

LASIK (laser in-situ keratomileusis)

At VIP Laser Eye Center, we perform only blade-less, all laser LASIK. During your LASIK procedure, a special laser, called a femtosecond laser, creates a flap in the center of the cornea. The flap is then lifted and a second laser is used to reshape the underlying tissue before your surgeon places the tissue flap back in position . There is no need for stitches, the recovery time is short, and you can have both eyes treated during the same appointment.

LASEK

LASEK, or laser epithelial keratomileusis, is a technique similar to LASIK. The surgeon loosens and removes a very thin layer of epithelial or “skin” tissue covering your cornea . He or she then reshapes the underlying corneal tissue with a laser, similar to LASIK. A protective contact lens is placed on the cornea for 5-7 days to allow the cornea to heal. Most people choose to have both eyes treated on the same day, although you may opt to have each eye performed on separate occasions due to the longer recovery time.. LASEK may be a better option if you have pre-existing dry eye disease, thin corneas, or other corneal conditions.
